Liège

Liège is situated in the valley of the Meuse River, near Belgium's eastern borders with the Netherlands and Germany. It is the industrial backbone and the principal economic and cultural centre of Wallonia. Liège, daughter of the Meuse river, is called 'La cité ardente' (the fiery city), a city at the crossroads of Northern and Southern European culture.

For centuries, Liège has been the capital of a prince-bishopric, which transformed the city into a major intellectual and ecclesiastical centre. Many historic buildings and musea remind the visitor of Lièges rich history such as the Palace of the Prince-Bishops, the Place Saint Lambert, the Mountain of Bueren and the slopes of the Citadel.  Liège is the birthplace of Charlemagne (his personality is inextricably linked to the history and popular traditions of Liège) and also of Georges Simenon, the Creator of the famous Inspector Maigret.

The city is well-known for several festive events ranging from folk- to jazz festivals and for the classic cycle race Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Liège is renowned for its significant nightlife and offers active alternative cinemas. The "Batte" market is where most locals visit on Sundays. The outdoor market goes along the Meuse River and also attracts many visitors to Liège.

But as important is the gastronomy of the city and the area: the famous ‘Liège Waffles’ were indeed invented in Liège in the 18th century, they are made with chucks of sugar, which caramelize and form a crispy, crunchy coating, Café Liégois is a dessert made with coffee ice cream. Liège is also famous for its old and young ‘peket’ (jenever, also known as junever or genièvre, or in the English-speaking world ‘Holland gin or Dutch gin’, the juniper-flavored and strongly alcoholic traditional liquor of the Netherlands and Belgium, from which gin evolved), for Galler chocolates, the Herve cheeses and many, many local beers.
